It’s kind of off-putting to talk or even think about crockpot recipes during a time when flesh-chomping zombies roam the Earth. But as preppers, we should be ready for any scenario even if you believe the walking dead are mere figments of the imagination. Part of the preparation for any emergency situation or apocalyptic event is to still have hearty meals not only to keep you energized and healthy but also to lift your spirits up.
You should know, however, that prime ingredients will eventually be scarce during the apocalypse. That’s why it’s a good idea to be self-sufficient right now so when SHTF, you will have ample food sources to last you for quite some time.
When it comes to hearty meals, the crock pot recipes listed below are basically easy to do and the ingredients are easy to find despite whatever circumstances you’d be facing in a dystopian future.
Some Simple Crock Pot Recipes

The secret to fast and easy crock pot recipes is to use whatever you have in your pantry. Stock up on the best ingredients possible this early so you’re guaranteed to have great meals in the future.
Black Bean Soup

Provided there is still electricity to use your blender, puree 3 cans of black beans. If that is not possible, just mash them as much as possible. In a crock pot, mix the pureed beans with 1 or 2 cans of tomatoes with green chillies and 1 tablespoon cumin powder. Simply heat thoroughly. Served best with guacamole or sour cream, if you still have some lying around.
French Onion Soup
Imagine sipping on hot delicious soup after a day of running away from the undead. French onion soup is one of the easiest crock pot recipes you can make. All you need should be in your prepper pantry.

In a crock pot, pour a little olive oil and sauté around 4 cups of yellow onions. Once the onions become translucent, add 3 minced garlic cloves and sauté for 3 more minutes. Pour in 5 cups of veggie or beef stock. This part depends on you. Stir in 1/4 cup dry white wine or cooking sherry, as well. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 sage leaf, a few sprigs of fresh thyme (dried thyme will also do), and kosher salt and pepper to taste. Let it boil for half an hour. Once done, remove the herb sprigs and ladle into smaller bowls. You can top the bowls with cheese and place them inside the broiler, which is located in the drawer below the gas oven.
Bread goes well with French onion soup. You should know how to make your own bread out of wheat and other ingredients. It’s not advisable to stockpile bread you can buy at the grocery since they usually have a short shelf life.
Fish Stew
Assuming the waters are not infected by the disease that turned zombies into the mindless creatures that they are, you should have a continuous supply of fish. First, make sure you know how to fish and you have the right gear to do so.
There are plenty of crock pot recipes with fish as the main ingredient. In a zombie apocalypse, you can’t be too choosy on what fish is going to rock your crock pot. As long as it’s not poisonous, then you’re good to go.

Place potatoes at the bottom of your crock pot followed by carrots, cabbage, and diced onion. Top it with the fish then add garlic, dried basil, dried thyme, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and powdered coriander. Finish it off with a can of diced tomatoes, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, and 2 cups chicken stock.

Cover and cook for 7 to 8 hours. It’s ideal to cook this over low fire. A campfire is better since you can save up on precious natural gas. However, make sure you control your fire as zombies may be attracted to huge fires such as the Greene’s burning barn in Season 2 of The Walking Dead.
Crockpot Chicken Adobo
Adobo means “marinade” in Spanish yet it is has popular versions in the Philippines and Mexico. They are also some of the easiest crock pot recipes you can make, zombie apocalypse or otherwise.
First of all, you need a chicken. You won’t have the luxury of buying frozen chicken from the grocery store during the apocalypse. Since you’re a homesteader, however, you should be raising chickens for meat and eggs.

After preparing your chicken, marinate it in a combination of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic and black pepper. Your chicken adobo will taste better if you marinate the meat as long as possible. Remember, you don’t have refrigeration though the vinegar will extend the life of your meat a bit.
Place your chicken and the marinade in your crock pot. You can add pieces of potato or carrot if you wish. Bay leaves will also give it more flavor and aroma. Cook for a few hours until the chicken is tender. Best serve over a cup of hot rice.
Squirrel or Deer Crock Pot
A chicken coop with too many chickens may as well be a recipe for disaster if zombies hear all the clucking and cockadoodling noise they’re making. It’s better to raise chickens if you live off-the-grid or somewhere with very few people. Remember, a crowded neighborhood means more people turning into zombies. You can also raise quails instead. They’re quieter, mature fast, and produce more nutritious eggs. Quail adobo also sounds good and is likely to taste great.
Anyway, in the absence of chickens or quails, you can do some crock pot recipes using other kinds of meat. Squirrels are cute but more importantly, they are tasty. You should also level up your deer hunting skills if you wish to enjoy some venison crock pot recipes.

For your squirrel crock pot stew, you need a couple of skinned, gutted and sliced squirrels. Put them in your crock pot along with some potatoes, carrots, green bell pepper, onions, and cabbage. All these should be readily available in your own backyard garden. Cover the ingredients with 2 cups of water then sprinkle with a teaspoon each of salt and black pepper. Let it cook in low flame for 8 hours.

You can’t fully enjoy your crock pot if you don’t make pot roast. Arrange four cloves of minced garlic, one chopped large white onion, some carrots, and mushrooms you foraged in the wild in the bottom of your pot. Rub the venison with garlic, black pepper and salt before placing it on top of the other ingredients. Pour a can of beef broth in your pot then cook for at least an hour. You can also add a bay leaf, thyme, and celery to make your pot roast more flavorful.

Of course, you don’t need a zombie apocalypse to enjoy different crock pot recipes such as the ones listed here. Take full advantage of a zombie-free world (for now) by stocking up on stuff you may need for your slow cooker and partake on such crock pot meals every now and then.
