An EMP attack will undoubtedly fry most modern electronic devices and render them useless, unless you act now and start stocking up on items that help protect electronic devices in an EMP attack.
The threat of an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack is one that’s blasted almost on the daily on TV, newspapers and even on the radio. The topic grew even louder when Hawaii mistakenly sent out a faux missile alert, causing panic and chaos among its residents.
The truth was revealed and it is scary: most Americans are not prepared for an EMP attack. The right survival kit can last you a few days or weeks but even the most well-stocked food storage will eventually run out of supplies. This has paved way for urban homesteading and going back to the basics like farming for self-sustenance.
But what about your gadgets? Will those survive an EMP attack? The answer is: maybe. Most modern devices will be dead in the event of an EMP attack. Older, more robust gadgets and devices that are mechanical in nature could survive – like your car! However, vehicles with electronically-controlled systems will likely malfunction. Also, don’t expect the navigation to work like it used to!
That’s because an electromagnetic pulse gets through metal objects like electronic devices and disrupts its insides (circuits and wiring, other minute metal parts). What you get is an electronic device that’s technically been electrocuted. Some spark, others short circuit and most of the time, they become useless.
This could be a problem for devices used for communicating like mobile phones, radios and lighting equipment. Staying informed, keeping up to date with important news and receiving announcements are all very important in the event of disaster.
How to Protect Electronic Devices
There is a way to protect electronics from the EMP surge: Faraday cages. Faraday cages are like hollow conductors, constructed in such a way that the outer layer (usually a mesh as in a cage) absorbs the surge of electricity that’ll otherwise go to your electronic device (safe right in the middle).
Although you can mimic how a Faraday cage works with an aluminum garbage bin and a very tight-fitting aluminum lid that effectively overlaps the bin, there is no guarantee. The tiniest gap could compromise the shielding power of your DIY Faraday cage.
If the electronic devices you plan to protect from an EMP attack are fairly small, going for ready-made storage is your best option. See 8 of the most highly-rated items on Amazon that could protect electronic devices in an EMP attack below. Click on the product names to learn more.
