Hard Sun and Luther creator Neil Cross has an interesting take on the apocalypse, particularly the versions we see on the big screens and boob tubes. “When confronted by the apocalypse, you choose life and do all you can to defend that,” Cross told to The Independent, describing perfectly why people go to great lengths to survive such events. What he didn’t elaborate on is how to survive if the apocalypse does happen.
One important aspect on how to survive a possible apocalypse is to accept that it may happen. That way, you could prepare for whatever it may bring.
How to survive a zombie apocalypse
At the start of the TV series, The Walking Dead, the main character traveled to Atlanta to find his family. That’s a big no-no as Rick Grimes would later find out. In a zombie apocalypse, the last place you want to be is in an overpopulated city. The more people there are, the more zombies there’ll be. And no, we’re not talking about singing and dancing teenage zombies.

When SHTF, head for somewhere isolated – like the hills. In the show, a group of survivors left the zombie-infested city and headed to a nature park, far from walkers’ reach. Or so they thought. Some flesh-chomping corpses made their way to camp likely because of all the noise the group was making. Using their firearms made matters worse as other zombies were attracted to the sound of gunfire.

A zombie outbreak is hypothetical at this point but the moral here is to steer clear of populated areas and minimize actions that’d get the attention of the undead or people who’d kill for your can of baked beans.
Speaking of, when society breaks down, you’ll need to work with other people though it’s best not to be completely trusting. As some poor souls found out later, the likable Governor was, in fact, a murderous douche while the people at Terminus had a huge appetite for survivor meat.
Fan-favorite Darryl Dixon did not survive this far because of his rugged good looks and piercing stare or because people threatened to riot if he died. He’s still alive because he’s built for the apocalypse. Darryl knows how to survive with the help of skills such as finding water, building fire, foraging, tracking, hunting, and butchering.

Darryl is also no stranger to weapons. He’s adept in handling guns from pistols to assault rifles to a bazooka. His weapon of choice, however, is his trusty crossbow. If you want to survive any disaster, be like Darryl without the zombie-ear necklace. Learn basic survival skills and know how to use weapons.

Another factor on how to survive a disaster is to find shelter. The prison would’ve been ideal for Rick and the gang if not for the Governor doing a little redecoration using a tank. When faced with a zombie horde or a megalomaniac out for blood, you should be ready to go. Prepare a bug-out bag filled with survival gear and supplies, which you can easily grab when SHTF.

Your BOB must have food and water. Without these two, you’ll find it even more difficult to survive out there. For sustenance, pack lots of MRE, energy bars and other lightweight food.

Lugging gallons of water will slow you down. Bring what you can carry and have ways of purifying whatever water you find or gather.

You need a get-away vehicle packed with supplies. Darryl has his motorbike, which can easily be maneuvered in tight places but doesn’t offer much protection from walkers and the elements. A trailer, like the one Dale owned, is the opposite of Darryl’s bike. It offers protection but is too big and slow. Whatever you choose for your bug-out vehicle, don’t forget to pack tools, extra parts, and duct tape. Plus, extra fuel.

How to survive a nuclear fallout
The 100 is a show about how to survive in a supposedly dead radioactive planet. A group of juvenile delinquents were sent down to a dystopian Earth to see if it was habitable again. On Earth, most of the survivors stupidly decided to cut off contact with the Ark. In real life, communication is vital. Clarke Griffin also knew to prioritize shelter, food and supplies. Again, basics.

When Clarke and her group first encountered “grounders,” they were attacked with primitive weapons. This proves that a key on how to survive apocalyptic events is to be capable of defending yourself, either with weapons or through hand-to-hand combat.

Guns are great until you run out of ammo. This was a major problem for the “sky people” when they were at war with the “grounders.” Melee and bladed weapons are better since they’re always useful, especially if you know how to use them properly.
These are just a few tips on how to survive the apocalypse according to a couple of TV shows. If you know other such shows and survival tips, holler in the comment section so other preppers can watch them too!
