If you happen to see someone in the buff getting busy with their garden, it means they are celebrating World Naked Gardening Day. Yes, darling, not all naked people dancing around their yard are high and banging on bongos. Some are embracing their sensuality while being one with nature. Others just really love gardening and hate clothes.

World Naked Gardening day is celebrated every first Saturday of May. It was started in 2005 by Jacob Gabriel, a permaculturalist, and Nude & Natural consulting editor Mark Storey. The two probably got to talking about their interests one day when a light bulb suddenly lit over their heads.

Many people have turned to backyard farming and gardening since the coronavirus lockdown. It’s not just hobby to take up out of boredom, though. This is a good opportunity to start your self-sustainable lifestyle, which should be the new normal after this COVID-19 brouhaha is over. Consider World Naked Gardening Day as just one of the things you can do to further boost your interest in gardening and farming.

Why Get Naked In Your Garden

To Get Some Vitamin D

The sun is one of the primary sources of vitamin D, which our body needs to better absorb calcium and phosphorus while also boosting our immune system. When you’re naked while working on your garden, there’s more surface area for the sun to work on.

To Relieve Stress

These are stressful times and you may need a different approach to de-stressing. Gardening is a popular hobby since it provides relief from stress. Being naked also gives you that feeling of being free from whatever it is that’s keeping you down. Combine the two and you get the many benefits of naked gardening.

To Be More Confident

You probably thought of hot women holding hoes when you first learned of World Naked Gardening Day. When you do some online research, you’ll probably be surprised or disappointed to see photos of naked people of all shapes, sizes and genders doing their thing in their garden.

That’s actually one of the things that make this day popular. It promotes body positivity. It teaches people to be more confident with their bodies while also showing the world that body shaming should be a thing of the past.

To Be One with Nature

Outdoor enthusiasts know what it feels like to be one with nature. Since you can’t go out to the wilderness or climb mountains, you’re best bet to bond with nature is to do some nude gardening on your own yard.

Please notice that we put the word “own” there. It’s imperative that you don’t show up at the neighbors without your pants on. Besides, we’re on lockdown and we’re pretty sure you don’t want to get locked up.

Back to being one with nature, gardening in the nude lets you have a multi-sensory experience. If you’re barefoot, you feel the ground under your feet. Being naked also allows you to feel the wind brush against your skin and the sun provide warmth all over your body.

To Have Fun

Admit it. You’re doing this mainly for fun. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Check out these photos of people gardening naked and you’ll get an idea how fun and sexy this day can be.

Be wary of local laws, though. While you’re on your property, you can still be charged with indecent exposure if you are visible to the public. If you want to celebrate the day, make sure you find a spot where you’re out of sight.

What You Need for World Naked Gardening Day

Before you drop your pants, there are some things you need to consider. First, you should know what the occasion is all about so it’s meaning and significance won’t get lost with all your clothes. Second, you’ll need to make sure it’s safe and perfectly okay to get nekkid. Also, you have to know a thing or two about gardening.

Sun Protection

One thing you don’t need on this special day is clothes but you still need to wear something to protect you from the harmful rays of the sun. Now we’re not contradicting ourselves here. We did say that it’s good to work naked in your garden and get some sun since you’re getting vitamin D.

You should do this early in the morning when it’s still considered healthy. Avoid direct exposure to the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, staying under the sun for up to 15 minutes for light-skinned people and up to 30 minutes for dark-skinned ones is considered healthy. Too long and you risk getting sunburn, skin cancer, and other possible health issues.

Apply Sunscreen

You can get away with a few minutes under the sun come early morning but you must wear sun protection if you plan to spend most of your time in your garden without your clothes on. Apply sunscreen after getting your recommended dose of sunlight.

The Hawaiian Tropic AntiOxidant+ Sunscreen Lotion is the best overall sunscreen according to Good Housekeeping. Their tests revealed that the SPF 50 sunscreen does not feel greasy, dry or irritate the skin, and burn the eyes. The Hawaiian Tropic product also didn’t leave any white residue and smelled like the beach. At $1.66 per ounce ($9.94 retail price on Amazon), it’s pretty affordable compared to most sunscreens in the market.

When it comes to best value, Good Housekeeping picked Ultra Sport Sunscreen Lotion by Banana Boat. It costs $6.97, which puts it at only $0.87 per ounce. UltraSport also doesn’t leave white residue and doesn’t feel dry and irritating on the skin.

Wear a Hat

Aside from sunscreen, you can also put on a hat. It still goes with your naked gardening theme plus you can use it to cover your juicy bits when you take some photos. Most importantly, it protects you from the harmful UV rays, especially the wide-brimmed ones.

The FurTalk Women’s UPF 50 Wide Brim Sun Hat takes sun protection seriously. The summer hat is made of recycled paper woven tightly to keep the sun off your face. It also comes with a lanyard to keep it from flying away during windy days.

Guys could use a hat to protect their pretty faces, too. You already know that wide-brimmed hats are ideal for gardening. The good thing about the Einskey Sun Hat and other similar ones is that you can wear them anywhere. Take it your next trip to beach (whenever that may be). Wear it while fishing or use it when you go on your next supply run. It can be folded so you can stuff it in your bag when you’re inside the store.

Wear Your Sunnies

Your eyes need protection, too, and your hat may not be enough. HQRP Clear Tint UV Protective Safety Goggles are made specifically to keep your eyes safe while doing yard work and other jobs. The clear scratch-resistant lenses lets you see what you’re doing while also keeping the harmful UV rays at bay. Its wraparound lens design keeps debris out.

Gardening Tools

Naked gardening without the right gardening tools is, you know, just prancing around your garden naked. You’ll need gardening tools for your photos and for working on your garden, of course.

If you’re planning to post your photos in celebration of World Naked Gardening Day, you could use a few gardening tools or other props to cover your bits. Use your imagination and find funny ways to hide your delicate parts. We’ve seen naked gardeners use a watering can to cover their crown jewels. Others prefer to simply hide behind their plants.

In case you’re new to gardening, you’ll need a number of items to start this newfound hobby. First of all, you should have the space for your garden. In case you don’t have a backyard, try starting a vegetable and herb garden indoors. You’ll also need seeds or seedlings, a good source of water, and organic fertilizers.

For the tools, start with the basic ones. You’ll need a hand trowel for your digging and weeding tasks. Gear Hungry adjudged the SE 8794SP Stainless Steel Mini Folding Trowel as the best hand trowel and for good reason. It simply looks gorgeous with its minimalist stainless steel design. It’s not just form over function with this hand trowel, though. It is made of premium grade material for durability while the folding handle along with the nylon canvas case makes it easier to store and transport.

World Naked Gardening day is a good time to trim your bushes. We’re talking plants, of course. The Fiskars Steel Bypass Pruning Shears is another must-have if you have such bushes or trees in your yard. The blades are made of fully hardened, precision-ground steel, which should stay sharp after pruning branches. The pruning shears glide through wood thanks to its low-friction coating. It also prevents rusting and keeps sap from gumming up the blades. Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty so if something goes wrong, contact Fiskars for repairs.

Wear a pair of gardening gloves to protect your hands from nasty stuff that may be hiding in the soil. The Garden Genie Gloves does that and more. It comes with claws made of ABS plastic for easier digging, weeding, and planting. Just be careful using it, especially if you feel an itch coming, since you’re, you know, nekkid.

Some gardening tools like the Edward Tools Hoe and Cultivator Hand Tiller, do more than just one specific task. It’s a good idea to invest on them so your tools don’t take up too much space. This multi-purpose tool from Edward Tools is made of carbon steel and solid oak. The wooden handle is wrapped in rubber for a more stable and comfortable grip.

If you’re having a hard time deciding which gardening tools to get, why not purchase a whole set of the basic ones you’ll need. The Scuddles 8-Piece Garden Tools Set, for example, includes a hand trowel, gardening shovel, cultivator, a mini rake, hand weeder, a spade for transplanting, a pair of heavy duty gloves, and a tote bag to keep your tools organized.

The tools are made of rust proof stainless steel while the gloves can be hand washed. The polyester tote bag is design with pockets to store individual tools.

Other Ways to Celebrate World Naked Gardening Day

You can share your nude but decent photos if you wish but that is not what World Naked Gardening Day is all about. Aside from spending the day tending to your prized petunias, there are other ways you can enjoy the day.

Hold A Simple Party

If the rest of the gang is up for it, you can all strip down to your undies or go full frontal and have some good, clean fun after your garden duties. Plan your meal and work together to prepare it. After cleaning up, you can start cooking your dishes, grill your steaks or hotdogs, or whatever feast you have planned.

Don’t forget the ice cold drinks. A day of gardening will surely make you thirsty. Prepare some lemonade or any juice of your choice. For the adults, you can enjoy a few cold beers or even open a bottle of wine to celebrate World Naked Gardening Day.

Take A Dip

You’re already naked or half-naked so might as well go take a dip in your pool. Don’t have one? There are ways you can freshen up after a day of work on your garden.

Set up your portable pool. Be prepared with all the mess you might make, though. Take a shower or wash your hands first before getting into your pool. You don’t want to be swimming in muddy water, do you?
