If you live in the city, youโ€™ve probably seen an actual riot or two. Heck, youโ€™ve probably joined one yourself. If thatโ€™s the case you know first-hand that even peaceful protests can get out of control. This is a good enough reason why you should take the necessary steps to keep your home safe from rioters.

Those working and residing near the state capitol buildings should be doubly wary of riots breaking out and turning violent. Even if you live far from these areas, you should still be on your guard. Thereโ€™s always the possibility that violent riots may spread elsewhere. Whatโ€™s even scarier is if it reaches your home.

Secure Your Doors

Keeping your home safe during riots begin with doing the right preparations. Itโ€™s not just rioters you should be worried about. Your home and your loved ones can fall victim to thieves, looters and other intruders. Itโ€™s therefore vital to turn your home into an impenetrable fortress.

Reinforce all entry points so that intruders cannot get inside. Check your doors. Youโ€™ll be surprised how weak most doors are. They need to be strong and sturdy to withstand a kick or a battering ram.

Secure the door frame to the house by using hardened screws at least three inches long. Any shorter than that and the frame can easily come off with enough force. Install a reinforcement lock, too. The Defender Security Satin Nickel U 10827 Door Reinforcement Lock can withstand 800 pounds of force. Itโ€™s a good idea to install them on your front and back doors as well as on the door of your panic room.

The Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar is another item you should have at home. In fact, you should also get one for the front door, back door, and for each room. The more reinforcements you have, the harder for intruders to force themselves inside. ย Itโ€™s also a good tool to keep in your car so you have a way of securing your hotel room door if youโ€™re spending the night away from home.

Intruder-Proof Your Windows

Most burglaries and home invasions were enacted because of an open or unlocked window. They will also be prime targets for rioters with the intent of looting or vandalizing the neighborhood.

The best option to keep your windows intruder-proof is to have steel bars installed. Fixed steel bars will be difficult to remove unless the perpetrator is using a power saw or similar tool. The Segal S 4752 Fixed Adjustable Child Safety Window Guard is not made of solid steel bars but of carbon steel square tubing. They may not be a sturdy as steel bars but they should provide a bit of protection from rioters and other intruders.

If youโ€™re unable to install steel bars, plyboards will do. Residences in hurricane-prone areas attach wooden board over their windows to keep the strong winds and flying debris from breaking the glass and causing damage to the house. The same idea is applicable if you wish to keep your home safe from rioters. Use long screws to attach the board to the house. Make sure you also secure the boards from the inside. Persistent intruders could unscrew the boards from the outside. That is, if they brought screwdrivers with them.

For sliding windows, you need something like the Defender Security U 9819 Sliding Window Security Lock. The aluminum lock keeps the window panels from sliding. You just need to tighten the steel thumbscrew to secure the windows.

Window films such as the BDF S8MC Window Film provide additional safety and security. Even if the rioters manage to break your windows, the film will keep the glass shards in place. Though not as strong as steel bars or wooden boards, the window film will give you a little more time before they manage to break through. Also, the film prevents shards from flying off and causing injuries.

Install A Home Security system

One of the best ways to keep your home safe from rioters and other intruders is to install a home security system. If they spot cameras or even signs saying your home is equipped with a security system, the would-be perpetrators may think twice before entering your property. The thought of their faces getting caught on camera should help deter their evil intentions.

When the alarm goes off, the piercing sound should be enough to scare away the rioters. The alarm will also tell them that theyโ€™re being recorded. No thief or intruder would want to be identified so they will likely scurry away.

The security system will also give you a heads up if the rioters get too close. Install cameras on your driveway with some facing both sides of the road. That way, you can see everything that approaches.

You want cameras and sensors with the farthest range. Guardline guarantees a range of up to 500 feet with their Wireless Driveway Alarm and Motion Sensor. It also boasts of a more accurate outdoor motion detector thanks to its adjustable detection width option. The outdoor sensor is also housed in industrial grade PVS case so it should continue to protect you and your home for quite some time. These factors, along with plenty more impressive features, make Guardline one of the most dependable home security systems available right now.

Stock Up On Supplies

Civil unrest or not, you should always have a pantry filled with food, water and other basic needs. Once violence takes over the streets, you should not risk going out anymore. That is if you really need to evacuate. Otherwise, stay in the safety of your home until the riots are over or the authorities have taken control.

If you insist on going out for a grocery run, you risk encountering some members of the violent mob. Theyโ€™re not the only ones you should worry about, though. Once you get into the store, youโ€™ll be likely met by a crowd of other last-minute buyers and hoarders. Thereโ€™s also the possibility of fights breaking out in these places because of the tension.

Rioters may also spot you going in and out of your place. That will attract attention, especially if you come home with supplies. Opening your door is also a no-no. Someone may be nearby waiting for their chance to enter your home.

Deal With Strangers Right

Some thieves may take advantage of on-going riots to do their dastardly deeds. Teach everyone in the household, children especially, to be careful when answering the door. They shouldnโ€™t open the door for someone they donโ€™t know even if the person mentions your name or someone familiar.

Be wary of strangers in uniforms, too. Some protesters or thieves pretending to be protesters may dress up like military people. If the person insists on you opening the door, call the authorities.

Keep Up with the News

Once safely inside your home, turn on the TB or radio and stay tuned to the news. Pay attention to announcements regarding the violent protests. Your local government should update their constituents regularly so that everyone knows what to do during such horrific situation.

Download A Police Scanner

The police are the most reliable source during these tumultuous times. You can always watch or listen to the news but keeping up-to-date with announcements from the authorities is your best option.

Download a police scanner app on your smartphone. The top five police scanner apps, according to Android Authority are Broadcastify, Police Scanner, Police Scanner X, Scanner 911, and Scanner Radio. You can also follow the social media accounts of the local police.

Prepare for Power Failure

Be prepared in case violence affects the electrical grid or damages power lines. Make sure you have extra batteries, wireless chargers, and powerbanks so you can charge your radios and phones. Itโ€™s important to have some form of communication with the outside world.

Keep a portable radio on hand. Once power goes out, you can stay updated with whatโ€™s happening by listening to the news on your radio. The Kaito KA500 Voyager Solar Radio can access seven NOAA bands along with AM and FM stations. It can be charged using batteries and solar energy so thereโ€™s no reason why you would miss out on updates and announcements.

The QuadraPro Solar Power Bank and similar survival tools are necessary during these times. If power does go out, youโ€™ll need a solar charger in case your phones and other devices run out of juice.

Things might become more and more tense when power is out and it starts getting dark. Itโ€™s a good idea to install emergency lights like the Baxia BX-SL-101 Outdoor Solar Lights where intruders may hide.

You have the option of using flashlights, portable lanterns, and other emergency lights. However, moving light may attract rioters lingering around your neighborhood.

Be on the lookout. Use the Carson Mini Aura Digital Night Vision Monocular to see in the dark and survey your surroundings. Once you spot someone, turn off all your lights. Wait until the coast is clear before using your lights again.

Keep Your Car Out of Sight

You should also look after your other assets not just your house. If you have a car or motorbikes, make sure theyโ€™re safely locked inside the garage. You should reinforce your garage door since it is considered one of the weakest points in a home. As a matter of fact, strong winds brought by a hurricane can easily blow a garage door away if itโ€™s not sturdy enough.

If you donโ€™t have a garage, you should find a place where you can hide your car. Park it in a spot thatโ€™s least visible from the road. It should face the road so you donโ€™t need to maneuver if you have to evacuate. That will take up some precious minutes.

Cover your vehicle to protect it from projectiles. Some deranged rioters may find it fun to throw rocks at houses. Your car may be an easy target and the best you can do is to place plywood or thick cardboard over the windows and hood. If you have enough to cover even the side and back, do so.

If you usually park on the road in front of your house, you should move it somewhere else. Ideally, your car should be as near you as possible. You could ask your neighbor if they have enough space for another car.

Since weโ€™re talking about cars, prepare yours for emergencies. If things get really bad and you need to evacuate to a safer place, you need it to be in tiptop shape. Make sure your tank is always full so you donโ€™t run out of fuel while fleeing the violence. Have your vehicle regularly checked so that itโ€™s in good running condition.

Keep an emergency kit in your car at all times. This kit should come with non-perishable food, drinking water and other items that will help you survive on the road. Of course you need your extra tire and car tools ready and raring to go.

Clear Your Yard

Remember, such people will take advantage of the chaos and pretend to be one of the protesters. While the protesters are marching the street and making their voices heard, those who mixed in with the crowd are only looking for victims. If theyโ€™re not busy picking pockets or jumping unsuspecting victims, they are looking for stores and homes to burglarize.

Keep your home less attractive to thieves and looters. Bring everything of value inside before locking up. You can also leave your trash scattered by the entrance. Just clean up when itโ€™s safe to go out.

Be Ready To Defend Yourself

In case the rioters reach your property and itโ€™s too late to evacuate, you may be left with no other option but to fight back. Aside from stocking up on firearms and ammunition, you should also have other ways to defend yourself.
