City life has its perks. You can grab an expensive coffee at any Starbucks branch anytime you need a boost. If you need something for your home, just head on to Ikea. Don’t want to go out, order everything online. But for those who have had it with the city, you may want to consider going off-grid. However, not everyone s built for this kind of living. If you want to experience living off the grid you will need to know different survival tactics.

Building A Shelter

If you know a thing or two about construction, you already have a little advantage when it comes to building a shelter. In the wild, however, you will not have access to power tools, cement mixers and such. You’ll be building your own cabin everything by hand.

Some may not be all in when it comes to off-grid living and may just want to try it out for a few days or so. If that’s the case, you can make do with a sturdy tent. A true outdoors, however, knows how to build emergency shelters out of anything they have and can find around them.

Starting A Fire

When it comes to survival, knowing how to build a fire is one of the most important survival tactics there is. You need fire to cook your meals, boil water, provide light and warmth, scare off wild animals, and to craft stuff. In some cultures, people use fire to burn land in preparation for planting.

Ideally, you should always have any kind of fire starter on you such as matches, lighters and magnesium flints. They’ll be pretty handy in emergency situations. However, one of the most vital survival tactics is creating fire without these things. Some of the ways of starting a fire include the hand drill, fire plough, and bow drill methods.

Looking for Water

Whether you’re going off the grid or staying in the city or suburbs, you need a constant source of water, particularly the clean drinking kind.  It’s quite difficult to find water if you live in the woods. If you are planning to stay in the wild, find a place that’s close to a body of water such a river or lake.  You will need to boil and purify the water before consuming, especially if you got it from a stagnant source.

If you’re in the mountains, you can find water by observing your surroundings. Look for animal tracks and be war of insect swarms. Their presence likely indicates a water source nearby. Watch out for flying birds in the morning or evening. Take note of the flight they’re taking. If you follow that path, you may so find water.

There are plenty of edible mushrooms and other food sources in the woods. You just have to identify them before stuffing them down your throat.

Hunting, Fishing, Setting Traps

You need to know how to hunt game, set traps and fish if you wish to dine on glorious meat. Aside from catching animals, you should also know how to clean and prepare them for cooking.

Self Defense

You’ll encounter lots of other beings when you live off the grid. This makes it pretty valuable to have survival tactics such as different ways of protecting yourself from threats. Be wary of wild animals such as bears. You should also know self defense tactics that can thwart the attacks of human threats.
