Outdoor Adventures
A good way to teach young girls that they can do anything other people can do is to take them outdoors. There are a lot of women who are into camping, hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, and other outdoor activities. Remove any doubt in your daughters that they can do these activities by taking them with you and showing them the ropes.
Young children, regardless of gender, need guidance. Let them know they can do anything from reading a compass to pitching a tent to building a campfire by teaching them how as early as possible.
Outdoor Sports
There was a time when women were not allowed to join a lot of activities, including marathons and Olympic events. In 1960, women were allowed to compete in the 800 meters running event after being left on the sidelines for 32 years. The reasoning behind this was that women were supposedly too frail to compete in a sport dominated by men for so long. Sadly, the winner of the event, Irina Press, and her shot put gold medal-winning sister Tamara were dubbed by Western journalists as “the Press brothers.”
In 1967, Kathrine Switzer made news by becoming the first woman ever to officially run the Boston Marathon. Interestingly, women were banned from running the said marathon. When race official Jock Semple saw Switzer, he tried to pull her off the course. Her boyfriend and other runners prevented Semple from stopping Switzer, who finished the race.
Books, Museums, Plays and Cultural Events
Most establishments will be commemorating the International Women’s Day come March 8. If you wish to reintroduce yourself or show your children to the most important women in history, you can take them to museums and such.
Another way you can get your children to be proud they’re female is to get them books that focus on women and their achievements.
Outdoor Concerts
There’ll be no shortage of concerts, festivals and other outdoor gatherings to celebrate International Women’s Day. Do a little research to find one near you.
What to Bring
Before you head out to celebrate International Women’s Day, make sure you are prepared for any eventuality. Many of these festivals will likely have kiosks where you can buy food and beverages. Still, you need to pack some of your own. Make sure you have a bottle of water and some energy-giving snacks on you. Bring extra money, as well, in case you have to buy more water.
Aside from food and water, you should keep other important and useful stuff in your survival kit. As a woman, you should be able to defend yourself when you need to. It may not be that wise to carry a pocket knife to a crowded concert. Opt instead for a tactical pen, pepper spray or mace.
The International Women’s Day celebration may go well into the night and likely until the early morning. That means you’ll be out in the dark. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Pack extra batteries, as well. When you walk home late at night, you should keep your emergency whistle within reach.
What to Wear
You should also war the proper attire so you can enjoy the celebration without worrying too much. Wear sneakers instead of sandals or heels. You’ll be standing for a long time so heels are out of the question. Flip-flops may be comfortable but there’s a chance that other people may step on you, especially when you’re in a crowd.
Wear something comfortable, which allows you to let loose and dance along to the music. Avoid wearing your favorite clothes. Wear something you won’t miss in case it gets ripped or stained. Also leave the dangling jewelry at home.
You’ll need a sweater in case it gets cold. However, you shouldn’t wear it to the concert. Just pack it in your bag and take it out if needed.
